Woodlands 2000 Trust

www.woodlands2000trust.org

In 1980, The Tamarind Group initiated a project that develops commercial wood lots for pastoralists in arid areas. We formalized this arrangement by founding The Woodlands 2000 Trust and by 2006 over 700,000 trees had been planted.

More recently the Woodland 2000 Trust has been developing, amongst other projects, a self-sustainability program at The Nyumbani orphans village in Kitui district, working with the late inspirational Father D’Agostino.

Woodlands Trust role at Nyumbani was to develop an agricultural and forestry model that would be sustainable for the village and also benefit the local community as well as The Village. Based on the shamba system, trees and crops have been planted in conjunction with the surrounding local community in order to provide food, fodder, fuel and building materials for the foreseeable future.

Tamarind cardholders generously donated many of the 10,000 trees planted.

As a further development of this initiative, The Trust is now developing a jatropha project to enable the village to produce biodiesel, which will enable it to run its machinery and tractors at a fraction of the current cost and have enough for sale.

Sports Sponsorships

The Tamarind Group is also very active in sponsoring sports and has been a regular sponsor of The Annual Carnivore Junior Squash and the Nairobi Swimming Association competitions in Kenya.
